Bansko - Peaceful town to top ski destination
Bansko - Peaceful town to top ski destination

If youre thinking of investing in Bulgaria, then up and coming all season resort Bansko is definitely worth a look. Surrounded by the Pirin, Rila and Rhodopi Mountains, just hour from Sofias international airport, Bansko is a mix of quaint old houses and cobbled streets with modern high-rise hotels and resort complexes, but the town hasnt lost its old charm and has a whole host of culture which the locals are only too happy to tell you about.

180 million euros was invested in Bansko between 2001 and 2004, with a further 5 million BGL promised by the government shortly after for investment in the regions infrastructure. There is further news of a new border being opened with Greece in 2008 making Greek beach resorts only a stones throw away, plans for a new Gondola station to be built in 2009, and for a private airport to be opened in 2010.

The all seasons resort of Bansko is currently attracting world attention and all of the investment and focus is rapidly turning the town into a real candidate to host the Winter Olympics in 2014. Bansko has a ski season that lasts from December to April and a total ski run length of 65 kilometres covering 14 pistes, and a lift network covering 26 kilometres, making it an ideal location to host this prestigious sporting event.

More than just ski slopes

But Bansko is not just about skiing, snowboarding and your typical winter break. Bansko is listed as one of UNESCO's World Heritage sites and the town and its surrounding forests are host to a wealth of picturesque natural beauty and rare wildlife species. Bansko is also a tourism centre for trekking, nature and an abundance of historic and cultural monuments. In the summer, the mountain resorts opens itself up to activities such as hunting, walking, fishing and sightseeing.

Today, the growing town has a permanent population of around 10,000 residents and in the 2004 - 2005 winter season, boasted 500,000 tourists, a high proportion of which were foreigners, with the region constantly investing time and money into increasing the number of visitors each year.

Hot Investment Topic

Bansko is the hot topic everyone is talking about and theres never been a better time to invest.

Bansko is the newest of Bulgarias 3 large mountain resorts. The other two, Borovets and Pamporovo, are also being modernised, but Bansko is surging ahead with world-class facilities on and off the slopes. The towns construction programme consists of dozens of 4 and 5 star hotels to compliment the 40 or so existing family-run traditional hotels and guest houses, as well as hundreds of holiday apartments, due to the increasing demand for accommodation as the town edges closer to major world ski destination. Over the last 10 years indeed, Bansko has gone from peaceful mountain village to the fastest growing ski destination in Europe - so why not the world.

As well as hotels and apartments, opportunities are opening up in the introduction of new shops, taverns, restaurants and cafes. Shops are selling skiwear from top suppliers and the restaurants and cafes offer high quality modern and traditional facilities.

Just as the ski slopes are being improved, so too is the town itself. Local council have visions of creating an all year round popular destination for holidays, sport, recreation and overseas home-seekers, bringing new investment and opportunities.

Even with all of the current investment and interest in the area, there is still money to be made in Bansko by the keen property investor.
