Exotic Costa Rica: The Wildlife
What do you think of when you hear the word Costa Rica? If youre like most, the words / phrases that come to mind most are Spanish, beach, clubbing, and fun in the sun. Those are all good things for a place thats known as a vacation destination but what should also come to mind is exotic wildlife.

While Costa Rica does have hundreds of miles of coastline that were seemingly made for fun in the sun as well as beaches along which many nightclubs where Spanish-speaking Costa Ricans work and party, Costa Rica has many more acres of varied terrain that are like no other in the Americas or the world. In fact, the land is so ecologically diverse that Costa Ricas government has the lands under strict protections. In all, approximately 25% of Costa Ricas land is protected.

Costa Rica land is comprised of more than a dozen protected animal safe havens as well as dozens of forests and national parks where much of Costa Ricas wildlife lives. The exotic animals that live in Costa Rica come from all categories of animals. So, what kind of Costa Rica wildlife can you expect to see? Well, have you ever seen a sloth? What about a Scarlet Macaw, an Ocelot, or a Jabiru? No? Perhaps turtles then. Youre probably more familiar with turtles, right? So, have you ever heard of a Leatherback Turtle? Not that either? Actually, Im not surprised because thats just the tip of the exotic wildlife living in Costa Rica.

There are literally several hundred varieties of insects, birds, reptiles, and mammals living throughout Costa Ricas nature reserves and you probably havent heard of any of them, but you can. All you have to do is take a hiatus from the beach and go on an eco-tour. In addition to the thousands of unique animals indigenous to Costa Rica, there is also plenty of exotic plant life. So, by the time you trek through the Costa Ricas unique lands-the swamps, jungles, rainforests, dry forests, cloud forests, etc.-and spend a few days exploring the beach and nearby cities, youre sure to have one of the most exciting and exotic vacations that you could ever imagine.
